The Sock Bun Experiment

One thing to know about my fashion and beauty posts:  I have crazy thick hair.

Which is both a blessing and a curse.

I've been searching high and low for a way to get those fabulous, wavy curls that everyone seems to know how to do.   I bought the hottest curling iron I could find. I used tons of hairspray.  I tried putting my hair in a ponytail and curling it in sections. It looked good for about a half hour to an hour, and then it just fell out.   A couple of hairstylists I know said I'd need to put some product in my hair to help hold the curl.  That would probably work, but for me to wash/dry/style my hair in the morning would easily take an hour+.     And I love sleep.  Anyways, a friend of mine had suggested to me a few times the sock bun, and I had watched a couple tutorials on YouTube that looked pretty easy, so I decided to give it a shot.  I found a lonely sock to use for my "donut" and so I went!

You basically put your hair in a high pony, put your sock donut around, and then wrap your hair around the donut.  It actually looks pretty as just a bun hairstyle also.  I sprayed a little bit of Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Sea Salt Spray on my hair in hopes that it would hold a little better.

Here's a before picture of my style:

It looks very pretty just as a high bun!

It was completely dry when I put it in this style, but I might have to try it very slightly damp.  Here's what it looked like the next morning:

I touched it up with a curling iron, tousled it a little with my fingers, and sprayed with hairspray.  I don't have a picture from the end of the day, but unfortunately, the curls only lasted about an hour.  I'm going to keep experimenting though and see if I can get it to stay a little longer.   If anyone has any tips on curling super thick hair, please please pleaseeeeeee shoot them my way!

Until next time,

Chelsey
